Sister-Ray : B.B.T
About The Track with Ten Tons Of Tone.
Sister-Ray are a Belfast-based alternative rock band set to release their debut track, “B.B.T”, on the 28th of August this year. To gain an insight into the debut release, Ten Tons Of Tone dove into the inspiration behind the track, why the band chose “B.B.T” as their introduction to the world, and what listeners can hope to take away from their first release.
Your debut single marks the first introduction to your music. What inspired the song, and what story or message were you hoping to convey through it?
We never like to name the canvas before we've painted it, metaphorically speaking. We rarely set out with a fixed meaning in mind, but once the song was finished, it became clear that it was driven by feelings of deception and distrust towards politicians. It began taking shape around the start of the Belfast riots earlier this year, and that atmosphere inevitably found its way into the music and lyrics.
Musically, our influences are pretty diverse because we all come from different musical backgrounds. You can hear elements of Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins, Limp Bizkit, Nine Inch Nails, and even Steely Dan throughout the track, particularly in its structure and the way it develops.
What made this track the right choice to introduce the band? Was there something about it that you felt perfectly represented your sound and identity as a group?
We felt this was the right track to introduce us because it captures who we are as a band in the most immediate way. It's punchy, bold, and fast, but still leaves room for the atmosphere that's such a big part of our sound. It strikes a balance between the raw energy people experience at our live shows and the more textured, cinematic direction we want to explore.
It's also one of the few songs that was completely co-written by the whole band. Most of our material starts with Sam and Fiontan, but this track genuinely reflects everyone's input, so it feels like the purest representation of us as a unit.
On top of that, it's concise. We wanted our first release to be something people could connect with straight away, while giving our longer, more expansive songs room to breathe when we eventually release an EP.
What do you hope listeners take away from this release, and how does it lay the foundation for what’s to come? Can fans expect the next release to continue in a similar direction, or will the next release showcase a different side of the band?
We definitely think this track lays the foundation for our sound, but we don't want people to expect us to stay in one lane. We have a clear vision of who we are, but we're not interested in putting ourselves in a box just because we've released our first single. Like us as people, our music is always growing and changing, and we want our art to reflect that.
More than anything, we hope listeners come away with a sense of curiosity and excitement for what's next. If this track introduces people to our world, then every song that follows should expand it rather than repeat it. We want each release to have its own identity and exist on its own terms, while still feeling unmistakably like us.
With “B.B.T” marking the beginning of their release journey, Sister-Ray are ready to introduce themselves on their own terms. As the band’s sound continues to take shape, this debut offers a first glimpse at what’s to come. For now, “B.B.T” is just the beginning.
